Best Bench Grinder Reviews

If you are looking for the best bench grinder for home use, there are several things that you may be interested in looking out for. The size largely depends on what you plan on using the grinder for, and in most cases the size of the grinder is proportional to the power of the motor. Simply put, the bigger the wheel, the more power is being put in. Though bigger means better in most cases, most of the time for home use a 6 in. grinder is the best since they are of course cheaper. They produce good linear speed for sharpening tools without burning them out, and fitted with the correct wheel can also do actual but light-duty metal grinding. Upon further reading you will find reviews of three 6 in. grinders.

What is the Best Bench Grinder to buy in 2017?

SKIL 3380-02 120-Volt 6-Inch Bench Grinder

SKIL 3380-02 120-Volt 6-Inch Bench Grinder

This SKIL grinder can be had for a bargain, and it gets good reviews in that front. As stated, this is a 6 in. grinder, and some of its features include adjustable tool rests and lights, medium and coarse grinding wheels, and a 2.1 amp motor.

Overall it gets positive reception from reviewers. This bench grinder is quiet according to reviewers, and for the asking price it is rather well built. Other positive comments include low vibration levels and stability even without it being bolted down thanks to the rubber feet (though I personally wouldn’t recommend this). Its low power output however deters it from ever being more than a heavy duty tool sharpener.

Craftsman 9-21154 Variable Speed 6-Inch Grinding Center

Craftsman 9-21154 Variable Speed 6-Inch Grinding Center

Variable speed grinders allow the user to adjust the speed according to the job or material they are working on. With a turn of a dial, the speed can be set from 2000 rpm which is best for finer grind wheels and to avoid overheating, to 3400 rpm which is more suitable for coarser grind wheels for faster material removal. It also comes with large adjustable tool rests with patented attachments which greatly aids in precision tool bit sharpening. It also comes with a wire wheel.

Reviewers are overall pleased with the Craftsman. The grinder is noisy but operates steadily according to reviewers, and its 2.5 amp motor with the variable speed feature makes it one of the best bench grinders for precision tool sharpening.

DeWALT DW756 6-Inch Bench Grinder

DEWALT DW756 6-Inch Bench Grinder

As expected from DeWALT the DW756 is the most powerful of the three grinders, with a 0.4 horsepower motor rated at 4 amps, and runs at 3450 rpm. No surprise that none of the reviewers comment about lack of power. Other features include aluminum tool rests, a 36 and 60 grit grind wheels, rear exhaust ports in wheel guards and cast iron housing and base.

Users are generally satisfied by the DW756 as a general tool sharpener. Its power meant it can handle just about any material, provided that it is fitted with the right grinding wheels. Speaking of which, users are dissatisfied by the standard grinding wheels that came with it, saying that they are sub-standard in structural integrity. Some reviewers also experience vibration from poorly made and balanced wheels. Lighting is also absent, which is available in some cheaper alternatives.

Buying the Best Bench Grinder

These three grinders are the best bench grinders reviewed but each have their pros and cons which may lead you to or steer you away from them. If all you need is fast way to sharpen the tools in your shed, then the very affordable SKIL bench grinder would be the obvious choice. For the price it is going for the DeWALT has little to defend itself. Although it probably has the most power for the money, the lack of consistency in build quality makes it almost a gamble when purchasing online. But, if speed and power is of importance for your 6 in. grinder, then the DW756 is the obvious choice, especially if fitted with quality wheels. The variable speed grinder from Craftsman may be the best to have if precision is priority. All three products perform well under the right circumstances.
